What is humanity working towards?

by Zach

Is our existence, merely, a game of trying to survive as long as possible? Does humanity have a greater purpose in the universe?

On the evolutionary level, like any other organism on this planet, we are programmed to survive as long as possible and pass down our genes. This is the bare minimum for the existence of humanity as a species, and it’s safe to say we have been pretty successful at it.

Individual human beings still need things like food, sex, belonging and self-esteem but, our society has already developed a cycle that creates these needs and pushes individuals to work towards fulfilling them.

Although self-preservation and the reduction of suffering remain in the meta-consciousness of humanity, we have already split off from our primitive beginnings in the natural world and carved out a new world for ourselves. The bubble of civilization that we now live in operates by its own rules, and humanity now has goals that would not make sense in the natural world.

Our goal as a species is no longer a purely biological survival mechanism. We now have a higher level of moral reasoning and the desire for the betterment of humanity.

But alone, we cannot control the trajectory of humanity; we can only control our own personal sphere. Through our own pursuits and influence on the personal spheres of others, each and every one of us has the ability to contribute to the collective ripple of humanity’s trajectory.
